If you ever thought that rally drivers were merely men and hey, even you could probably manage it then you simply have to see this clip from the 2006 X-Games. Overdrive is a massive fan of the near-mythical Colin McRae MBE, a really nice Scotsman who was sadly and tragically taken away from us at just 39. He was of course one of the best drivers the world had ever seen.
Towards the end of his career he was roped in to kickstart an American take on rallying for the X-games. As much as we hate American versions of perfectly good European things, this is actually quite a spectacular form of motorsport. Its like the Race of Champions except with dirt and jumps. We’ve got the video, and it’s pretty much one of the best car-related videos we’ve ever watched.
The way McRae drives here astonishing. He is mere millimetres away from solid walls, sliding a 4 wheel drive Subaru sideways on tarmac. You’ll struggle to find a better piece of driving anywhere, or a worse piece of commentating.
But the real fireworks are at the end, just a few hundred metres from the checkered flag. It’s no use me telling you what happens, it will only ruin the surprise. And you won’t believe me.
Be sure to hang around for the post-race interview, McRae’s thick Scottish accent is like an oasis in a sea of US showbiz falseness.
Oh, and the difference between 1st and 2nd at the end: 6 tenths of a second.

I love when you talk about this type of stuff in your blog. Perhaps could you continue this?
