Alonso insures thumbs; insurer forbids excessive Playstation usage

Wednesday, April 28th, 2010

Formula One can be ridiculous at times. Honestly, it’s like a petrol-burning version of Bold and the Beautiful. Obviously feeling a little out of the spotlight, Alonso has gone and announced that his thumbs are insured, to the tune of £9 million.

In a statement that could be straight out of The Onion, a Santander spokesman said: “Alonso’s thumbs are a big symbol as, apart from being essential when driving a Formula One car, they represent a sign of victory and that everything is under control and well protected.”

We couldn’t make this stuff up if we tried. So what have we learnt here? Firstly, one requires opposable thumbs to pilot a 900 horsepower racecar. Well, probably. And secondly, Alonso’s chief concern, should he lose one of his precious digits, is not being able to display his happiness after winning a race.

Ron Dennis is a weirdo. Not since Howard Hughes locked himself in a hotel room with jars of urine and wore tissue boxes as shoes have we seen anyone display such an aversion to germ-carrying scruffiness. His level of Second-World-War-matron-at-a-Catholic-hospital idea of cleanliness even extended to not allowing employees at McLaren to have any personal effects on their desks. Not even pictures of their families.

Oh dear. It hasn’t been an easy couple of weeks for Renault. After title sponsors ING and Mutua Federale peeled their stickers off the side of the car, the BBC is reporting that Ferrari are set to announce Fernando Alonso’s signing with the Italian team. Alonso is to race alongside the injured Felipe Massa in 2010, replacing Kimi Raikonnen who is tipped to move to McLaren. In the ensuing driver shuffle, Robert Kubica is expected to replace Alonso at Renault. Crikey, if only the on-track antics of the sport were this exciting.
