New Mercedes A Class Is Squarely Aimed At BMW’s 1-Series

Tuesday, March 6th, 2012

Mercedes has departed hugely from previous A-Class designs and will launch this brand new model at Geneva today. Obviously the relative success of BMW’s foray into premium compacts was becoming too much to ignore for their chief rivals in Stuttgart.

Mercedes are obviously better at making cars then they are at PR, just have a look at this stunning line from Dr Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars: ”A is for Attack: the A-Class is a clear statement of the new dynamism of the Mercedes-Benz brand.” Right, okay then.

There’ll be a range of engines from 1.6 to 2.0 litre, some normally aspirated and some turbocharged. There will also be an AMG version (hell yeah!). Your A class will also come with some features in CAPITAL LETTERS, which is something Mercedes LOVES DOING for some ANNOYING reason. I’m not joking, this is copied verbatim from the press release:

  • ATTENTION ASSIST (standard)
  • Brake HOLD function (standard)
  • Hill-Start Assist (standard)
  • DISTRONIC PLUS
  • Adaptive Highbeam Assist
  • Blind Spot Assist and Lane Keeping Assist
  • Speed Limit Assist (speed limit sign recognition)
  • Active Parking Assist
  • LINGUATRONIC
  • Reversing camera

Told you. Anyway, a few more pictures and full press release after the jump.

Why You Don’t Want a Convertible – Latest On My GQ Column

Friday, February 24th, 2012

You want one, don’t you. A Cabriolet. A Droptop. A Convertible. You think it will improve your social life, help you get more out of summer and achieve more sex. You picture yourself whisking your better half away for a dirty weekend, pottering down tree-lined country lanes with the wind in your hair – not a care in the world.

Well, you’re mostly wrong. You do not want a convertible.

Mercedes C Class Coupe unveiled, about blerrie time

Wednesday, January 19th, 2011

For a while Mercedes trucked on with the frankly weak C Class hatchback thingy. With tough competition from Audi’s A5 and BMW’s 3-Series coupe range, it really was about time to launch something a little more alluring.

Currently, reports say things like: “Little is known about the C-Class Coupe…” What utter claptrap. It’s not like they’re going to fit a Nuclear Fission device to the C350, or offer a microwave as an extra for the cubby hole. Expect standard C-Class engines and trims and of course the obligatory AMG version, which, after our experience with the 4-door C63 AMG, should be shit hot.

For now though we get to enjoy what is simply a terrifically attractive modern Merc.

Driven (loudly) – The SL 63 AMG MadMan Edition

Wednesday, February 10th, 2010

Every now and then a movie comes along which quite simply blows you away. A Dark Knight was that movie for me. It is a masterful arrangement of celluloid; a symphony of action, suspense, emotion and well, explosions really.

Heath Ledger was remarkable as the joker: he personified evil. His polar opposite is obviously our winged hero, in a thankfully less camp batsuit. And representing both sides in one tormented and twisted character: TwoFace. This poor bugger starts of a charming bastion of all that is saintly until someone really pisses him off, creating the most frightening villain imaginable since Anton Chigur in No Country for Old Men.

Driven: The brutally luxurious S65 AMG Limo-Spec

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010

There’s a famous VW ad from the 60s which asked, “Ever wondered how the guy who drives the snow plough, gets to the snowplough?”.  Well if you’ve ever wondered how the guy who owns the snowplough company gets to the snowplough company, Mercedes-Benz has the answer: The S 65 AMG L-spec.

It proves the Germans have a sense of humour after all.  They’ve handed their svelte, distinguished flagship S-Class over to their dark arts division, AMG, and the result is the most powerful series saloon ever built.
