Hirvonen crashes out of Rally Finland in spectacular fashion

Saturday, July 31st, 2010

Motorsport throws up many emotions for spectators; we certainly don’t want racing drivers to roll their Ford rally cars at over 100mph, but my goodness it’s hard to not to revel in this spectacular footage. This particular piece of film is quite special in that it features frames from a spectator’s camera moments before it is annihalited by the green Ford, then in car footage of the crash, and then finally outside footage of the huge roll.

Mikko Hirvonen was leading Rally Finland when he crashed out yesterday, destroying the Abu Dhabi sponsored Ford but leaving both himself and co-driver, Jarmo Lehtinen, unharmed. In the open-chequebook days of the WRC these sorts of spills were a bit more common, one gets the sense that drivers are forced to dance a fine line between looking after the team’s budget and shaving milliseconds off the clock. This in a sport that recently saw stalwarts Subaru retire amid financial meltdown, amongst others.

Interestingly, Mini this week announced it will return to world rallying, with it’s much anticipated Countryman model. More on that later.

Driving God (Literally): Walter Röhrl

Thursday, March 11th, 2010

"Rohrling" an Audi in a parking lot nowhere near Bedfordview.

Where I’m from “Röhrl” means fight. One might “rawl” in a parking lot or near a lake for instance, occasionally risking one’s life in the process.  Luckily Walter Rohrl wasn’t born in Benoni where he would have been expected to fight inside a cage at Carnival City to live up to his name. He did, however, risk his life in various other ways inside a roll cage for many years.

G-g-gi-gi-gi-nius. The Stuttering Brilliance Of Gigi Galli.

Thursday, October 22nd, 2009

With eyes like a startled lizard and a driving “technique” that veers between autistic and artistic, Gigi Galli operates way beyond what is considered normal, even in the mentally ill world of the WRC.  You might not have heard of him, but in the same way Colin McRae loved to throw it away, Galli’s exuberance and sheer speed often means that part of his car ends up in France after he hits a tree in Finland.  He’s like the butterfly effect in Nomex.  We’re going to be bringing you a regular dose of men we consider to be suitably outlandish and stylish to warrant a mention as the greatest drivers ever to do in cars what other men cannot.

You know that one friend you have who insists on turning to talk to you while they’re driving, even if you’re in the back seat.  Watch for Gigi Galli doing exactly that over a pace note discrepancy.  At 160km/h. In a forest. Ladies and Gentlemen, sound your air hooters and get out of the way, it’s Gigi Galli.
