Gemballa (the company) files for insolvency

Wednesday, February 24th, 2010

Uwe Gemballa's swan song: The MIG U1 Ferrari Enzo.

Oh dear, like adding too much Maizena to a watery stew, the plot has certainly just thickened. Uwe Gemballa’s wife, who has power of attorney for his company, Gemballa Automobiltechnik GmbH & Company, filed for insolvency yesterday. The move has fueled speculation that Mr Gemballa may have staged his own disappearance. His wife insists however that the company is still operational, but unable to repay certain debts.

Gemballa representative Ekkehard Krebs confirmed reports today that Uwe Gemballa’s wife, who has power of attorney, filed for insolvency for Gemballa Automobiltechnik GmbH & Co. in a German court. Krebs also added “The company is still operating, still working.”

We reported on Monday that the last time anybody heard from Mr Gemballa was on the 9th of February, in a call he made to his wife from Johannesburg. The family is still offering a sizable reward for information. The thing is, how do you come back from this sort of stunt, if that’s what it is?

Have you seen this wealthy car tuner?

Car tuning is not terribly big on our radar, but we do know of Uwe Gemballa. He’s a bonkers German who looks at a perfectly good Porsche or Ferrari, and decides that it should be bright red, with massive wheels, a few spoilers here and there and about 200 more horsepower. He’s been in business, successfully, for decades now and at the age of 54 has suddenly vanished. Strangely enough, the last time anybody heard from him, he was in Johannesburg.
