Nascar Sundays: “Lifting is for losers!” [+video]

Monday, April 26th, 2010

In flight entertainment, yesterday.

Gavin and I have often threatened to watch Nascar. It’s a form of motorsport that has so far failed to really pull us in beyond the grandeur of the opening ceremony. And what an opening ceremony it is. This is a spectacle you simply have to see to believe.

Picture, if you will, a racetrack facility roughly the size of Bloemfontein. Thousands of winnebagos dot the landscape, spewing over 100 000 drunken sunburnt fans into an arena of noise and product placement. The commentators are getting excited now, peppering their delivery with metaphors that make absolutely no sense. And then all is quiet. Over the gargantuan PA system, a voice rings out: “Let us pray.” A portly man with an awful comb-over holds command over his congregation, ending the prayer with the words: “and we pray for our armed forces, Amen”. Surreal, but we’re only just getting started.

Drives from the Near Past: Audi R8 V8

Monday, December 7th, 2009

Alrighty, so Audi were super cool and handed us the keys to a very badly abused Audi R8 V10 last week. Sodding journalists. Anyway, the car was simply magnificent and we’ll tell you all about it…tomorrow. But just to refresh your memory, here is my take on the first R8, followed by Gavin’s inevitably hilarious view on it as well.

The R8. To get it sideways, you have to park it like this.

It’s very easy to be cynical about the Audi R8. It has the very same engine as the RS4. It has the same sun-visors as the TT, as well as the same air-con switch gear. And when you’re handed the key there is nothing, not even a little R8 moniker, to distinguish it from, you guessed it, the TT’s keys.

This is all forgotten however when you simply stop for a moment and look at the car. It is quite extraordinary. Modern in every way yet with just the right amount of curves to make sure it retains that absolutely necessary supercar trait: sex appeal. And the R8 has that by the bucketload.

Script: So are the days of our Uneventfulness
Season: 43
Cast: Mike Horn, Tina Hope, Cassidy Parker

CUE INTRO MUSIC and TITLE SEQUENCE

Like leaves blowing by on a gentle wind with absolutely nothing happening to them, so are The Days Of Our Uneventfulness.

EXTERIOR: NIGHT

Open on a well appointed study. A man, CALLAGHAN PIFARETTI enters. He is STILL MARRIED and has never HAD AN AFFAIR with anyone. Ever. In fact, he doesn’t know what AFFAIR MEANS. HE isn’t particularly DASHING or SMART. He fixes himself a scotch (which is actually apple juice in a decanter) and stares out of the bay window. In the courtyard below he sees absolutely NOTHING out of the ordinary.

His wife enters and tells him that the company is running smoothly, and there are NO HOSTILE TAKEOVERS from men with poorly executed pseudo-European accents and moustaches.

mustang gt500 cape town (8)

I was fortunate enough to grow up with a classic ’66 Mustang in the driveway. It was candy apple red, had a bigger V8 than it should have had and a very, very loud exhaust. It sort of cemented my love for the Shelby-penned classic and to this day, in my mind, it is the iconic American muscle car. We spotted this one outside Waterfront Studios in Green Point. That’s not a car, that’s just pornography – Edition 1

In our first instalment of “That’s not a car, that’s just pornography”, I’d like to bring to your attention the BMW 507.

I have a bit of a weakness for this car. I think it’s because I feel better about life just knowing that it exists.

62 corvette

I know Hugh Hefner has one of these. He has good taste in most things except women as far as I can tell, so that’s not a bad thing. It the achingly beautiful Chevrolet Corvette, circa 1958, and it is fantastic.

BMW X6

My uncle owns a top-notch, busy little Italian eatery in Seapoint, Cape Town. It overlooks a petrol station and a main road. It has a few tables outside on the wonky paving which are perfectly suited to enjoying a glass of wine and arguing about whatever drives past.
